Haroon
Hassan

Haroon has over 15 years experience in dispute resolution within Australia and internationally. He has appeared as an advocate in superior courts and specialist tribunals and is often called upon to advise on sensitive and urgent matters. His clients have included high-profile individuals, governments and listed companies.

He has degrees in Arts and Law (with Honours) from the University of Adelaide, where he was awarded the Justin Skipper Prize. In 2003 he completed a Master of Laws at Columbia University in New York where he graduated as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.

Prior to his admission to practice he was an associate to the Hon. Justice John Perry AO in the Supreme Court of South Australia and to the Hon. Justice Mary Gaudron in the High Court of Australia.

Commercial Law

He regularly appears in commercial matters before State and Federal Courts, as well as specialist tribunals. He has acted as counsel in disputes over high value contracts, shareholders rights, directors duties, employment and industrial matters, copyright, breach of confidence, trade marks, domain names, data breach, information technology, consumer law claims and energy law.  He also has experience in the area of corporate insolvency and has appeared on behalf of liquidators, receivers and administrators in a range of matters (including the conduct of public examinations).

Media, Entertainment & Sports Law

Haroon regularaly acts for leading publishers and broadcasters throughout Australia. His clients have included the Seven Network, Nine Network, Fairfax, News Corporation and the ABC.  He regularly advises on defamation, contempt and applications under the Open Courts Act. He has presented guest lectures at Melbourne Law School in the subjects "Media Law" (JD Program) and "Contempt, Free Speech & the State" (LLM Program). In addition to his media work, Haroon also acts for leading sporting organisations, administrators and athletes.

Planning & Local Government

He has extensive experience in local government matters and welcomes briefs in planning and development  disputes and panel hearings. He has acted for objectors, permit applicants, responsible authorities and interested parties in matters arising under the: Planning & Environment Act, Local Government Act, Heritage Act, Aboriginal Heritage Act,  Crown Land (Reserves) Act, Public Health and Wellbeing Act, Liquor Control Reform Act, Administrative Law Act and Major Transport Projects Facilitation Act.

Public Law & Regulatory Matters

Haroon has considerable experience acting for public sector clients who exercise regulatory functions and powers. This includes appearing as counsel in judicial review matters, merits review hearings, disciplinary proceedings, compulsory examinations, inquiries and prosecutions. He is often briefed by regulatory authorities and practitioners in disciplinary proceedings at first instance, on review and on appeal.  He is also experienced in the regulation of the Education sector (having acted both for and against regulatory authorities operating throughout Australia).

Alternative Dispute Resolution

In addition to his work as an advocate, Haroon is a nationally accredited mediator. He welcomes briefs to mediate disputes in his areas of practice.
