Young’s List is delighted to welcome Sam Profitt, who signed the Victorian Bar roll on 7 May 2020.
Sam Profitt practises primarily in commercial and public law, and also accepts briefs in criminal law matters.
Before coming to the Bar, Sam was the Senior Associate to His Honour Judge Cosgrave (Head of the Commercial Division) and Associate to Her Honour Judge Marich of the County Court of Victoria. As a result of his time with Judge Cosgrave, Sam is well versed in the procedure and conduct of urgent and complex interlocutory applications such as freezing orders, security for costs, summary judgment, and claims under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payments Act 2002. Sam also assisted his Honour in the management and hearing of trials involving a wide range of areas of commercial law, including contractual disputes, trade practices, partnerships, equity and trusts, and property law.
During his time with Judge Marich, Sam gained experience of a wide range of criminal proceedings. Sam is familiar with all aspects of the criminal process in the indictable stream, including bail applications, pre-trial hearings, jury trials, pleas and matters under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997.
Prior to his time at the Court, Sam worked at Slater and Gordon in the Commercial and Project Litigation practice group. As part of the Class Actions team, Sam gained experience working on a number of securities class actions brought against multinational and publicly listed companies, as well as a mass tort proceeding against a statutory corporation.
Sam holds a Juris Doctor and a Bachelor of Arts (with first class honours) from the University of Melbourne. As part of his Juris Doctor, Sam developed a particular interest in cross-border disputes and private international law. He also holds a Diploma of Languages and is fluent in French, and studied at the Université de Paris-II (Panthéon-Assas) as part of his Juris Doctor.
