Young’s List is delighted to welcome John Heard, who signed the Victorian Bar roll on 7 May 2020.
John Heard practices in all areas of commercial litigation with a focus on insolvency/restructuring and banking and finance.
Prior to coming to the Bar, John was Senior Associate to a Judge in the trial division of the Supreme Court of Victoria (Commercial Court) and Senior Associate at Dentons 大成 the world’s largest law firm.
John advises on and appears in commercial disputes, litigation, insolvency administrations, and workouts/restructurings. He has also acted for institutional investors and superannuation funds, all major banks, and other tier lenders on contentious matters and recoveries.
John has broad experience in preparing for, and accepts briefs in, commercial mediations – and he also accepts briefs in pre-hearing conferences in the lower Courts.
As a solicitor-advocate he appeared in the Federal and Supreme Courts and in VCAT in, variously, winding up applications, directions hearings, general commercial disputes, and public examinations under the Corporations Act.
John sits on the Australian Bar Association Indigenous Issues Committee and he helped lead the team of private practice lawyers that set up and ran Australia’s first free trans and gender diverse legal clinic (with the Inner City Legal Centre).
John completed a Master of Laws degree at Melbourne Law School (first class honours average).
John is reading with Dr Paul Vout and his senior mentor is Christopher Caleo QC.
