Kate Anderson recently travelled to Papua New Guinea to provide advocacy training to PNG law school graduates at the Legal Training Institute (LTI) in Port Moresby.
This year, DFAT sponsored the Victorian Bar’s trip which ran for 1 week and included 11 barrister volunteers from the Victorian Bar. They were joined by two lawyers from Vanuatu who earlier this year attended the “Train the Trainers” program run by the Victorian Bar. There were 92 PNG students (including 1 Solomon Islander) at LTI undergoing training pre their admission.
Three barristers from the Victorian Bar each provided a CLE/CPD seminar for the PNG Law Society. Kate Anderson on “pleadings”, Maya Rozner on “affidavits” and Carrie Rome-Sievers on “written submissions”. CLE/CPD is not mandated in PNG but there was still a large turnout; certainly a sign of strong interest in it.
The barristers received a very warm welcome from the local lawyers, the Chief Justice Sir Gibuma Gibbs Salika, other judges and the LTI. They were all appreciative of the efforts to impart further skills and knowledge from practice in the law.
